Kermit & Me – Being Green – Hand Soap

KermitWelcome to Kermit & Me – Being Green.  As an event planner it is important to be up on the latest trends in decor, event design and of course color, and I am here to tell you, green is the new black!  That is why, whether I am planning an event for a client, dinner for friends or lunch for my family, I always think GREEN!

We are all citizens of the earth and I am happy to see that so many of us have joined in the care of our environment and our earth.  It is a monumental job, but making green choices is not that hard, especially if you make one small change, say, every month or so.

Kermit knows it is not that easy being green, but in the end, green is what he is and he does embrace it.  This blog category will offer you easy changes you can make and small steps you can take to be green, like Kermit & Me.

Let’s start with washing your hands.  You (should!) do it every time you come in the house and before you eat and always after some other critical tasks you perform during the day!

But what are you putting on your hands?  EDTA?  FD&C Red Dye #40? Sodium Lauryl Sulfate?  Do you even know what that is?  Are you cleaning your hands or rubbing them with harmful chemicals?  Well I’ll tell what I know, and though it is not a lot, it is enough to change my mind on hand soap and perhaps yours.  Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, though it lathers nicely, breaks down and irritates the skin, allowing other perhaps not so good ingredients to penetrate the skin.  Ingredients like dye’s can be carcinogenic (cancer causing) and EDTA is a stabilizer that has been found to be a major pollutant in waterways around the world.

So just knowing this bit of info, I am now making a small change in my shopping list.  Instead of chemical laden hand soap, I am going to buy a soap with only recognizable ingredients.  These would include hand soaps by Kiss My Face, Burt’s Bee’s, Method, Avalon Organics and Dr. Bronner’s.  These types of soaps are available at most health food stores, Whole Foods and even major supermarket chains.  You will be washing with ingredients that are cleansing and soothing to your skin, not irritating to your skin, or the planet.

So, don’t forget to read labels, access your options and shop wisely.

Until Next Time,

Cheers,

Your Event Planner,

Jill
